2021.10.16 22:08 SrCipri Bitcoin: Bank deputy calls for urgent crypto regulation

Cryptocurrencies need regulation as a "matter of urgency", according to Bank of England deputy governor Sir Jon Cunliffe.
Crypto technologies do not pose a risk to financial stability at the moment, he said.
But there are "very good reasons" to think that this might not be the case for much longer, Sir Jon said in a speech.
A future cryptocurrency collapse could spread through markets, he warned.
A severe fall in the value of crypto-assets - for example, to zero - could force investors who have taken on debt with brokers to have to find cash to pay them.
"Similarly, there is the possibility of contagion," he said. "A large fall in crypto valuations could affect investor risk sentiment more broadly, causing investors to sell other assets that are judged to be risky and those perceived to have a similar investor base."
"Interconnectedness creates the possibility that shocks are transmitted through the financial system," he added.

In the past year, crypto-assets have grown around 200% in value from just under $800bn (£580bn) to $2.3tn (£1.7tn).
While this is relatively small in the context of the $250tn global financial system, the 2008 financial crisis was triggered by the sub-prime sector which was valued then at $1.2tn, Sir John said.
Most crypto-assets, such as Bitcoin, are not backed up in the real world by assets or commodities.
They are essentially strings of computer code, and make up 95% of the $2.3tn. As a result, they are volatile, he said.
Connections between cryptocurrencies and the traditional financial system are also growing as big investors, hedge funds and banks become more involved, Sir Jon said.
"Bringing the crypto world effectively within the regulatory perimeter will help ensure that the potentially very large benefits of the application of this technology to finance can flourish in a sustainable way," he added.

2021.10.16 22:08 HalfAndHalfCherryTea 22[M4F] Canada/Anywhere - Hey, You! Yeah You!

Are you bored? Like, really bored? Maybe even a bit lonely and looking to fix that?
Well look no further than this very post! I’m happy to introduce you to… myself! I’m Carson, I’m a 22 year old guy from somewhere in the western part of Canada who’d love to get to know you, mysterious person reading this post!
About me:

  • I look something like this!
  • If any of this matters my personality type is ENFP and I’m an Aquarius! I don’t personally put any weight in those things but if you do that’s cool, and now you know!
  • I’m about to start a new job this coming week at a local coffee place! I previously worked at Starbucks for three years but decided I needed a change, so I’ll be working at this new place for a year before I start school.
  • Speaking of school I’ll be starting a social work program next September! I want to work with at-risk youth and hopefully make a difference in someone’s life.
  • I really like photography and I currently own four cameras. A Canon EOS 650, a Konica T3, a cheap little Fujifilm point and shoot, and a Polaroid 600! All film of course because who needs the convenience of digital, right?
  • I also play music! I play both guitar and bass and like to think I’m mildly okay at playing both. I also own a ukulele but don’t play it much.
  • Some artists I really like include Jeff Rosenstock, Drug Church, Alvvays, Joyce Manor, Black Flag, PUP, Turnstile, and King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard.
  • Politically I’m a socialist and would prefer if you’re left-leaning as well. In no way shape or form am I looking to debate some Ben Shapiro wannabe so please don’t waste your time or mine.
  • A few other things about me include that I enjoy reading, being out in nature, cooking, and playing a few video games. I’m also 420 friendly but wouldn’t consider myself to be a “stoner.”
What I’m looking for:
  • Preferably I’d like to find some sort of relationship, but I’m down for anything really!
  • I’m not picky about physical appearance and have found that I’m attracted to a wide variety of people. I would prefer if you include a photo of yourself with your message, or at least after we’ve talked a bit. I just like to be able to put a face to your name!
  • Location is also a non-issue! Obviously similar time zones make it easier but anyone from anywhere is welcome.
  • I’d prefer if you’re around my age give or take a few years.
  • I’d also prefer if you have some sort of similar interests.
  • I value emotional maturity and honesty. Be honest about what you want and how you feel, and if things aren’t really vibing with you don’t be afraid to say that.
I think that’s about it. If you think we might make a good match feel free to send me a message! Please introduce yourself and preferably a picture of yourself too! I can’t wait to meet you!

2021.10.16 22:08 WispenCookie finally got a blueair!

I threw in the towel this morning after my 4th tissue piled up next to my morning coffee. Every time I'm sitting at home, my allergies bother me to the point of taking pills.
I currently have a Honeywell in my bedroom with a permanent filter that does wonders, but needed something on the main floor for a larger space.
Heard many good things about blueair, and the CBC Marketplace episode comparing brands sold me on it.
I made sure to replace my furnace filter a couple weeks ago, and will need to get back into routine vacuuming since I have birds and rodents (overtime work schedule made me break the habit), that with the purifier should hopefully keep my allergies at bay.
I plugged in an electricity monitor, and the blueair is showing 3.4 watts of power Consumption on the auto setting, which is currently on low.
I see the filter is rated to last 6 months with 24/7 operation, does the activated charcoal component last the full 6 months? Or does it only help with smells for the first couple months?
